How transliteration works

مرحبا

Arabic → Latin

م is m, ح is ḥ, ر is r, ب is b, ا is ā — مرحبا becomes marḥabā. Harakat (َ ُ ِ ّ) are turned into vowels and doubling.

Привет

Russian → Latin

П is P, р is r, и is i, в is v, е is e, т is t — Привет becomes Privet. Handles щ→shch, ю→yu, я→ya.

Ελληνικά

Greek → Latin

Ε is E, λ is l, λ is l, η is i, ν is n, ι is i, κ is k, ά is a — Ελληνικά becomes Ellinika.

What is the difference between transliteration and translation?

Transliteration converts letters between alphabets by sound: Привет → Privet (how it sounds, not what it means). Translation converts meaning: Привет → Hello. This tool does transliteration only — use a translation service if you need meaning.
