Here are ten practical tips to type Greek quickly and accurately, whether you use our online Greek keyboard or a physical Greek layout.

1. Learn the 220 layout by touch

The Greek (220) layout maps letters to familiar English positions. The top row gives you q=; , w=Ο‚, e=Ξ΅, r=ρ, t=Ο„, y=Ο…, u=ΞΈ, i=ΞΉ, o=ΞΏ, p=Ο€.

2. Capitals are one key away

Hold Shift to type capitals: Shift+V types Ξ©, Shift+G types Ξ“, Shift+D types Ξ”. No separate caps key needed on most Greek layouts.

3. Sigma and final sigma

Type Οƒ for mid-word and Ο‚ for the end of a word. The final sigma is on the w key. Remember: Οƒ can never end a word and Ο‚ can never appear inside one.

4. Know where omega lives

Ξ©/Ο‰ sits on the v key in the Greek 220 layout β€” a common source of confusion because it does not match the English position of the "o".

5. Theta, xi and psi positions

θ on u, ξ on j, ψ on c. Committing these three to memory fixes most slow-typing bottlenecks.

6. Use the online keyboard as a cheat sheet

When you are learning, keep our Greek keyboard open: every key shows both its lowercase and its Shift (capital) character, so it doubles as a visual reference while you practise.

7. Practise with common words

Type Καλημέρα (good morning), Ξ΅Ο…Ο‡Ξ±ΟΞΉΟƒΟ„ΟŽ (thank you) and Ο€Ξ±ΟΞ±ΞΊΞ±Ξ»ΟŽ (please) repeatedly. These are the most useful words for daily Greek.

8. Accents matter

Modern Greek words carry a tonos accent (Ξ„) on the stressed syllable, for example Καλημέρα. In everyday typing the accent is often omitted, but correct writing includes it.

9. Test yourself

Use our learning mode with flashcards and quizzes, then measure your progress with a typing test. Muscle memory develops fastest with short, frequent sessions.

10. Copy and reuse

Every text you type can be copied or exported as a .txt file. Build a small library of Greek phrases and reuse them in emails, social media and documents.
